In late 2001 Dukie was hit by a car. Fortunately, Valley Animal Medical Foundation was able to get the money to repair Dukie's broken hip and find him a home. He was adopted by Mark and Trudie Edwards where he was named 'Duke of Girls', because he was the one male dog in a group of females. Dukie was the first animal rescued by the Valley Animal Medical Foundation.
